In this course, students will explore the fascinating and non-intuitive description of the physical world through the study of relativity and astrophysics. Students will gain an understanding of the discoveries made in these fields and develop physical insight and quantitative skills. Topics covered include the postulates of special and general relativity, experimental tests of both special and general relativity, paradoxes in special relativity, tools for problem solving in special relativity, astrophysical situations where the consequences of relativity qualitatively impact predictions and/or observations, and daily situations where relativity makes a difference. No textbook is required, but notes will be posted weekly and a list of supplemental resources, including textbooks, will be provided.
[Applications]
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to apply their knowledge of relativity and astrophysics to a variety of contexts. They should be able to explain the meaning and significance of the postulates of special and general relativity, discuss significant experimental tests of both special and general relativity, analyze paradoxes in special relativity, apply appropriate tools for problem solving in special relativity, describe astrophysical situations where the consequences of relativity qualitatively impact predictions and/or observations, and describe daily situations where relativity makes a difference.
