Cyberpsychology is an emerging field of study that examines the impact of technology, particularly virtual reality and social media, on the human mind and behavior. Mainstream research focuses on how the Internet and cyberspace affect the psychology of individuals and groups. Topics of interest include online identity, online relationships, personality types in cyberspace, transference to computers, addiction to computers and the Internet, regressive behavior in cyberspace, and online gender-switching. Cyberpsychology also includes the study of the psychological implications of cyborgs, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. Media Psychology, a specialty within the field, is supported by the Society for Media Psychology and Technology of the American Psychological Association (APA Division 46), which includes many cyberpsychologists among its members.
