Dr. Pim van Lommel, a cardiologist, gained international recognition after his groundbreaking study on Near Death Experiences (NDEs) was published in the respected medical journal The Lancet in 2001. This study was unique in that it was a prospective one, with conditions set and ready before patients underwent cardiac arrest. The results showed that physiological explanations for the NDEs were inadequate, thus raising profound questions about the nature of consciousness and its relation to brain function.
In this in-depth interview, Natalia Vorontsova of the Essentia Foundation discusses the philosophical implications of these findings with Dr. van Lommel at his home in the Netherlands. Topics covered include the involvement of Dr. van Lommel with NDE research, perceptual changes, possible root causes, the attempt to explain the unexplainable, a man who lost his dentures, the relationship between science and subjective experience, science and non-local consciousness, the potential for a paradigm shift, the personal impact of the research, and personal insights.
