This course will provide participants with an understanding of the role of international law in resolving disputes between nations. Participants will gain an understanding of the strategic and critical thinking necessary to engage with legal problems and contemporary debates. Additionally, participants will gain an awareness of the limits of international law as a tool for influencing behaviour and for settling disputes. Through case studies on topics such as Guantanamo Bay, lethal drone strikes, weapons of mass destruction in the Syrian conflict, counter-piracy operations, international terrorism and investment disputes, participants will gain an understanding of the application of international law in real-world scenarios.
