This course, How Brands Use Design & Marketing to Control Your Mind, will explore the various tactics used by brands to influence consumer behavior. John Mauriello, an Adjunct Professor of industrial design at California College of the Arts, will discuss the BS Continuum, Information Asymmetry, Emotional Alchemy, Visual Signaling, Seller Reputation & Trustworthiness, and five categories of manipulation. He will also discuss the ethics behind their use, questioning the motives, and equipping ourselves to recognize and resist manipulation.
Throughout the course, John will provide examples of how these tactics are used in the real world, and will discuss the most manipulative brand. He will also provide resources such as books, online courses, and a discord channel to help students learn more about the topic.
At the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of how brands use design and marketing to control their minds, and will be better equipped to recognize and resist manipulation.
