This course provides learners with an in-depth exploration of African American music traditions and cultural values. It covers the history of African American music, from its roots in jazz and swing rhythm to its more modern forms such as rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, and gospel. Students will gain an understanding of the many voices who have told stories of pain, joy, and hope through their music. They will also learn about the demographic shifts during World War II that had an impact on the development of African American music. Additionally, they will gain an understanding of the twelve-bar blues form/progression and its influence on various sub-genres of African American music.
