This course will provide an overview of the importance of power quality in power systems. Participants will learn about the causes of power quality issues, such as uncertain events from the utility end, generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as from the consumer and manufacturer end. Common power quality issues and parameters, such as transient side, voltage variation, unbalanced voltages, flickers, distorted waveforms, total harmonic distortion, power factor, and varying frequency will be discussed. The effects of poor power quality on the power system and the detrimental things it causes to equipment and other devices will also be explored.
Power quality standards, organizations that produce them, and where to find specific power quality standards will be discussed. Participants will learn about power quality improvement techniques, such as power system studies and power conditioning devices, surge protectors, filters, voltage regulators, and UPS. Power quality monitoring will be discussed in detail. By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of the importance of power quality in power systems.
