This 60-Second Reading Intervention Training course has been designed to support teachers, teaching assistants, tutors and parents in delivering effective reading intervention to children falling behind age-related expectations. It will provide an overview of how and why the use of intervention tools such as running records and reading-age assessment are so valuable. The course is designed to be completed in around an hour and will cover texts suitable for children with a reading age of less than 5 years and those with a reading age of over 7 years. Alongside developing fluency, this programme gradually builds comprehension skills by providing accompanying questions that begin by requiring a verbal answer and progress towards constructing written responses. The accompanying running record offers diagnostic guidance which allows users to identify specific weaknesses and tailor the scheme to support each individual child. The tracking grid allows users to accurately assess the progress of all children within a class at a glance. Information gained from this intervention programme can be used to assess pupils’ reading speed and fluency, highlight gaps in pupils’ phonics knowledge, identify the next steps in a pupil’s learning journey, identify gaps and tailor provision for groups, report information on pupils’ progress to parents and caregivers, develop a consistent approach to reading intervention across KS1, allocate support staff time effectively, and identify books appropriate for a pupil’s reading level.
